Your Country Break
Evarné’s Horse Hotel is in a protected area – the buffer Zone of the UNESCO Magaliesberg Biosphere. Although wild animals do not generally prefer human company, you’ll find yourself being observed by monkeys and squirrels. Do not leave temptations (fruit, etc.) out in the open when you leave the lodge. Monkeys in particular, will happily go inside and eat all your fruit and make a huge mess while doing so. Keep doors and windows closed when you are away from the lodge!
A total of 90 indigenous mammal species have been recorded in the Magaliesberg Biosphere. These include the klipspringer, sable antelope, baboons, leopard and brown hyena. While meerkats might be more shy than monkeys, other inhabitants such as a wide variety of snakes, really do prefer to not have human company, so be mindful, and allow them to blend back into nature where they will want to get as far away from you as possible.
The bird diversity in the area is exceptional. In total, 46.6% of the bird species recorded in the southern African sub-region are found in this area. You can expect to see Cape vultures, eagles and owls. Closer to home, less welcome flying companions at the lodge are wasps and bees.
Be cautious, be observant, be aware – as you would when visiting any natural environment. You are visiting habitat that belongs to wild creatures, be respectful.
No pets, other than your horse, are allowed.

WiFi, Netflix and DSTV, all kitchenware, towels and linen and wood for the braai
Andalusian
Strongly built, and compact yet elegant, Andalusians have long, thick manes and tails. Throughout its history, it has been known for its prowess as a war horse, and was prized by the nobility. Their most common coat color is gray and is consistently selected for athleticism, it is among the first horses used for classical dressage.
The Andalusian master suite has an elegant French Provençal ambience. The beautifully appointed king sized bed with convenient reading lamps both sides, seemingly ‘floats’ in the centre of the room.
Pass through double cottage pane doors, to a dressing room, complete with an antique wardrobe and an elegant chaise longue day bed overlooking the front garden. The spacious shower is as tempting as the slipper soaking bath which is perched on Victorian feet and affords a view to the very private and secluded gardens. Twin basins complete this indulgent master bathroom.
Lusitano
The ancestors of the Lusitano were originally used for classical dressage, driving and bullfighting on horseback. Closely related to the Andalusian, they are agile and calm and in 2006, the entire Portuguese dressage team rode Lusitanos at the World Equestrian Games.
The Lusitano en-suite queen bedroom again reflects the French Provençal palette and combines with some witty contemporary twists. Seasoned pine headboard and side tables, and an old fashioned school-desk, all both functional and decorative.
There can be no doubt of the creative hand behind the plumbing and lighting where gleaming copper pipes have been fashioned into taps, and galvanised pipes adapted to bring functional lighting exactly where needed! This slate tiled bathroom has a shower.
Lipizzaner
Generally gray in color, the Lipizzaner is a breed of Baroque type that is powerful, matures slowly, and is noted for longevity. The breed is associated with the Spanish Riding School of Vienna, Austria, where the horses demonstrate the haute école or “high school” movements of classical dressage.
Painted wooden furniture again tips an acknowledgement to French Provençal style in the Lipizzaner suite. The soothing grey palette with teal accents creates a calm environment.
The cosy double bed is positioned for a view overlooking the front garden. Adjacent to the Appaloosa room, the two share a luxurious bathroom.
The Shetland, an additional (single) day bed is positioned outside the two suites, providing a comfortable bed for a ninth guest at the Lodge.
Appaloosa and Shetland
The Appaloosa is best known for its distinctive, leopard complex-spotted coat, which is preferred in the breed. Spotting occurs in several overlay patterns on one of several recognized base coat colors.
The Appaloosa twin bed suite adjoining the Lipizzaner has gold accents on the dark grey wrought iron bedsteads and cheerful bright yellow finishes on the rocking chair, curtains and some soft furnishings.
The Lipizzaner and Appaloosa rooms share a bathroom with a luxurious contemporary free-standing slipper bath.
The Shetland Pony, a Scottish breed of pony, is hardy and strong. Today, they are ridden by children but are also seen at petting zoos and sometimes are used for therapeutic horseback riding purposes.
The Shetland single additional bed in the open plan living area is available for a ninth guest in the lodge, booked in addition to one of the other suites.
